Self care day 28:Self care Wrap-up

Its has been 27 days of self care tips. 10,000 words written to help those in need. I think my hand is starting to cramp with all of the typing I have been doing. I kept my promise and posted every single day in the month of February. I was so worried I would miss a day and it kept me up nights writing late into the mornings sometimes but I made it!

I am going to list all the post here, in case you missed any or want to share all of them with friends who may need them. I do thank you all for joining me on this incredible journey this month. I hoped I help someone out there. I will also be adding a tab on the main page for easy access.

Oh sleep. How I love you so. Let me count the ways. It is most unfortunate that we have not had a good relationship these last few years. My body has gotten in the way and I wish to rekindle our love for each other.

OK, melodrama aside, it can be quite difficult to fall asleep for some of us. We can factor in so many things such as working to late, coffee, or just being not tired.

Can a pillow be the answer?

I believe it can.

Go grab your pillow. How old is it? Have you used it for years? Is it providing what you need at night? Have you tried to wash it and it just doesn’t have the floof in it anymore?

Why not buy a new one?

Pillows are an item we count on and use every day but we do not seem to replace very often. We use them for years, add a new one to the mix when one gets too flat, and eventually they seem to disintegrate into thin air. Honestly ask yourself when the last time you looked to replace your pillow?

I hold myself in the category of almost never.

I remember growing up, I asked for one of the buckwheat husk pillows for Christmas. I had heard about them on TV and wanted one. I lived in Florida at the time and one of the benefits I had heard about was that buckwheat husks stayed cool while you sleep, providing a cooler night sleep. Living in the subtropics were nights were in the 90’s made this seem like a dream come true.

So, I asked for a pillow for Christmas.

Yes I was “that kid”.

I remember sleeping on it for quite a few years. I vaguely remember me having to get rid of it due to a hole. Since then, I have not thought about it until this blog post almost 10 years later.

Why do we miss the little things that can make our lives better?

If all it takes to get a better night sleep was a pillow, would you do it?

Would you take care of yourself, just a little bit?

Self care day 8: Blackout

Being able to be so connected and in touch with people in today’s life is amazing. You know what your friends grandma is doing and that your second cousin twice removed is have their teeth cleaned. You also know that one guy you met in a coffee shop once is having for dinner.

Do you ever wonder if it is too much to process?

Being able to be so in touch is fantastic. Plenty of people to talk to or socialize (or just the few close ones for us introverts). We have all of them at our fingertips on our phones. We get the notifications pouring in on the computer. Little birds tweet at us when we get re-tweeted.

Sometimes it can be too much. Sensory overload.

Take a break. Stop.

I want you to plan a time to go on a social media blackout. Let people know in advance so they don’t think something has happened and they call or text at all hours trying to see what happened. Do this for a day, or week, or even a month. Stop the overload.

Purge yourself of all the incoming information.

I did this a few months back. I deleted Facebook from my phone and deactivated my account. Seeing the notifications on my phone when I woke up in the morning was stressful. Checking statuses was painful. Hate was flying around (and still flying around) and I was in physical pain at how hurtful everyone was being.

So I stop the tide.

I gave myself a break and stopped. I cleaned out my hard drive (brain) and let it calm down. I wholeheartedly think that we do not realize that we are getting so much input that it overloads us.

Stop the input.

Work on you.

Self care day 5:Cookie monster

I am not a big sweets eater. I have been known to only eat a small amount of desserts most of the time. I cannot stand Oreo cookies (egad the horror!). But I cannot deny the small of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies as one of the best smells in the whole world.

Whether its memories of being at grandma’s house or a certain time of year like around Thanksgiving, the smell of cookies baking is amazing. Researchers have said smell is one of the most powerful memory triggers. The Fifth Sense tells us:

The sense of smell is closely linked with memory, probably more so than any of our other senses.  Those with full olfactory function may be able to think of smells that evoke particular memories; the scent of an orchard in blossom conjuring up recollections of a childhood picnic, for example.  This can often happen spontaneously, with a smell acting as a trigger in recalling a long-forgotten event or experience.  Marcel Proust, in his ‘Remembrance of all Things Past’, wrote that a bite of a madeleine vividly recalled childhood memories of his aunt giving him the very same cake before going to mass on a Sunday.

Now, while we know the smell of cookies very well, we also know the time, effort, and skill it requires to make that delicious cookie. I myself, while a small talented baker, sigh at the thought of making such a mess in the kitchen. So instead, find a place that delivers cookies.

My daughter watches more cooking shows than I knew existed and one of the coolest shows I saw was when they showed people who started a bakery and they delivered soft warm cookies to the doorstep. They showed how they slow bake them so when they arrive at your doorstep, the cookies are “fresh from the oven”.

I did a quick search of my local area (Dallas, Tx) and found MANY places that deliveries cookies. Think of being at work and having cookies delivered to you. I dare say that most of your coworkers will be jealous (order enough to share!).

The best thing I saw was a spot on Insomnia Cookies. They are a baking company that ships cookies around the US and the local bakeries were shown to deliver cookies until 3 AM!! The thought just made my mouth water.

Cookies can be fantastic. Valentines day is coming up. Why not “treat yourself”, aka Parks and Rec style, and get yourself some cookies. Put a smile on your own face.

And hey send me some cookies while you are at it. Regular chocolate chip. I’ll wait.

Labor Day quickie.

I find the title funny because I am now employed! I am back in the labor force and am going to be stocking shelves overnight at a big box store. My family is in need of a little extra income to make it through the month and pay some bills off. I really wanted to be able to make my blog work on donations or my convention work to pick up the slack but that is not the case.

I hope everyone remembers to treat others as humans this weekend and not like robots. I do believe in good karma and treating our fellow man as a person and not a cog in a corporate machine. As you encounter people working this holiday weekend, go out of your way to say thank you. Make them feel special. You could help save a life.

Entrapment

I feel trapped. I am stuck in what feels to be a dead-end job that is sucking the life out of me. Being on vacation this past week has made me realize that I am dreading going back to work.

I hate that.

I like to enjoy my job. I would like to be able to work and leave work at work. I do not like being harassed about my job when I am out with my family.  There have been many times that I have been recognized in the local community of the place I work at. I then get asked questions about sales, items in stock, and more. Sure I could decline to tell them or just try to ignore them but what then? It comes back to haunt me when they see me next and say I was rude to them, even if it is off the clock.

So what happens then?

I get in trouble.

I also am bombarded with emails and text messages at home, all work related. I have to make calls and schedule people from home. Now many would say “that is a part of salary (I have been told it is earning my salary)” or “That is management”.

When is enough, enough?

How much can a person take?

I feel I am reaching that limit.

Attack on me.

I cannot stand being called a liar, an idiot, stupid, and other derogatory remarks. Being told off by customers is never fun but is part of the job (of customer service) they say.

Why is it part of the job?

Who says its normal?

It is not normal to call someone names over the phone. It is not normal to threaten someone that you will get them fired because you feel slighted, even if you were!

Why do we accept it?

How come we just stand there and take it? Why do we let people attack us over and over and look at them with a forced smile and say “Hey a nice day” after it all is over?

People are terrible.

This comes about after I had this altercation with a customer today. I had someone calling to look for a new product for something that is over 20 years old. I told the customer that we do not carry said product, new or used, and that I know a store that possibly carries it. Before I can even tell the customer the name, he calls me a liar. He said he just saw the product being sold new a week ago. I told him I had not seen anything and that we still did not carry it. He then asked about accessories for the 20 year old product. I told we did not carry anything for the product and that he would have to find a retro store for it. He then asked for specific items and told me to look them up. After each item, I asked if it was for this same 20 year old product and he said yes. I told him after each one, including one that he couldn’t remember the specific name for, that we do not carry the product and I would not be able to assist him. He then asks for a made up item that has never been made before. I inform him that we would not be able to help him further and hung up on him.

He calls back several times while I am busy and I am unable to get to the phone until 15 minutes later. I answer with my company and my name. He asks me to repeat my name and tells me he just called me and I was extremely rude to him on the phone. He asks why I would hang up on him, and I inform him that I would not be able to assist him in finding items we do not carry. I told him repeatedly that we do not carry these items. He said I was the rudest person he has ever spoken to in his life. He said he was just looking for a not so hard to find product that we actually do carry that has all the stuff he wanted. I told him that I would be able to look that up, but he cuts me off and says that I was rude and an idiot and he didn’t want to talk to me anymore and he wanted the manager. I informed him I was the manager. He told me that my company were idiots to give me a store to run and he had no idea how I could be a manager. He wanted my district manager’s name and number. I told him my DM’s name but said I would have to take his phone number and have my DM call him. He said that wasn’t good enough and that I was refusing service. He asked for my customer service line and that he wanted a local number to call. I told him it was a 1 800 number and that there was no “local” area coded number. He told that I was being rude again and that he now had enough to get me fired. He then told me he would do what he could to get me fired. I told him if there was nothing more that I could do, that he could have a nice day and he hung up.

Now I know most of you would say “Hey, pony guy. This was just a harmless prank call.” I beg to differ.

I have handled my share of prank calls but this one was different. The person attacked me personally. He threatened me and said he wanted to take away my livelihood. I don’t care who you are, you just don’t do that.

So now I am at home, being fed a delicious sandwich by a loving wife who knows that bacon is one way to make me happy. I have my pony and coffee as well and am calming down. I still feel angry at the whole thing. And I know that people will be say I am too sensitive but I don’t understand why we accept this kind of behavior.

The call.

So I have been waiting to write this from the moment it happened. It was a busy day at work, being 3 days befoire Christmas and we are busy. I am in the back room running stock. I have been sick all day and have been keeping to the back room. The phone rings and I recieve the following call.

Me: “Thank you for calling [large retail game store], this is [my name] how can I help you?”

Caller (woman in 30s-40s): “Yes I just wanted to let you know that I called you guys earlier and I believe I spoke to you” (I have been at work an hour at this point) “in fact I am pretty sure it was you and I had you read off your sale items to me. I then found the sale item that I wanted and decided that my son and I would come get the skinny jeans that are on sale.”

At this point I put the phone on speaker as one of my assisant managers and another employee are in the room and they start listening. The woman has not stopped yet.

“Well when we got to the store, I sent my son in to get them and they told him they were $39.99 and not $29.99 like you said in the ad this morning and Now I am out side your store upset that you would tell me a promotion that wasn’t going and and I need to know what you are going to do about it? You really should be more careful about what you tell people over the phone. Some people don’t listen and you should do a better job informing them of the current promotions. I am now parked outside your store and I want you to fix this.”

At this point, she has talked for about 5 minutes on the phone, clearly upset, wanting me to fix her  problem. My two employees are in shock, waiting for me to answer as they have no clue what is going on.

Me: “Well ma’am, I am sorry to here that, but here at [large VIDEO GAME retailer] we do not sell skinny jeans, nor do we plan to do so”

At this point my employees hear me say “skinny jeans” and bust out laughing so loud, I have to put my hand over the phone.

Caller: “Who do you think…wait who is this?”

Me: “This is [large VIDEO GAME retailer], a video game retailer, not a clothing store”

Caller: “Oh, this isn’t [large clothing store that sounds nothing like my store]?”

Me: “No ma’am.”

Caller: “Oh” *click*

My employees are trying not to roll on the floor they are laughing so hard. I looked at them and said, “God help whoever that woman does talk to.”

Thinking about it afterward, I feel she should have apologized to me but instead she hung up. Good luck lady, I hope you find your peace in your heart to be nicer to people who are probably just making an honest mistake.
